How do reed diffusers work?

Whether at a large-scale event, like a wedding or corporate meeting, or a more intimate gathering, like a birthday party, or housewarming, scent creates a shared experience. The fragrances you use are as important as the means by which you disperse them. Flowers, food, candles, room sprays – each can have an olfactory influence. Another method of scenting a space, one that Scentex uses in its workshops and stations, is a reed diffuser.
What is a reed diffuser?
A reed diffuser is a bottle or jar that’s filled with scented oils; reed sticks (some type of absorbent, usually wood, material) absorb the oil, which then diffuses the scent throughout the room.
How do reed diffusers work?
The oil is absorbed into the reeds in a process known as “capillary action”. When the oils soak into the reeds, they diffuse into the air through evaporation – giving the room its fragrance.
Unlike a candle or a spray, reed diffusers can be turned “up” or “down” by increasing or decreasing the number of reeds.

Why reed diffusers instead of candles or sprays?
Reed diffusers don’t rely on aerosols or burning products, and they don’t release a physical molecule into the air to create smells, reducing the likelihood of irritation through physical contact or inhalation.
At Scentex, we use a combination of essential and synthetic oils in our diffusers. This creates the best options for fragrance creation and is the most environmentally sustainable way to develop fragrances. All of our materials are IFRA compliant.
How do I get the most out of my reed diffuser?
If you notice the scent seems to have lost some potency or is just not as strong as you’d like, but you have plenty of oil, you can flip reeds over (Scentex founder and CEO Tiffany Rose has a helpful video to show you how to get the most out of your diffuser here), or add more reeds. Be sure not to overcrowd the reeds, however, as this can reduce airflow, causing the scent to not flow out as easily. Conversely, if you find the smell of the diffuser too strong, you can reduce the number of reeds.
